This is essentially what #article13 will be in reality as opposed to what @AxelVossMdEP@twitter.com claims it will do.

"We call on the European Commission to promote the dissemination of Free Software filter technologies"

@fsfe , SRSLY???

Why not free/libre/open-source DRM, free/libre/open-source tracking, profiling and predictive algorithm, free/libre/open-source drone strikes, while we're at it? What a disgrace :(

I'm told they renamed #Article13 to #Article17... I get a strong feeling that's a move specifically to shake off the papertrail of protests around it on social media.
We expect a significant blow to EU business, especially in the IT branch, once this law gets implemented. Let's see what can be done at later stages to limit the damage.

Dark day for internet freedom: The @Europarl_EN has rubber-stamped copyright reform including #Article13 and #Article11. MEPs refused to even consider amendments. The results of the final vote: 348 in favor, 274 against #SaveYourInternet

Boingboing puts #article13 in a historical perspective: what is the effect of censorship in advance vs censorship after publishing?

Hey, please help keeping @Gargron and all the other #mastodon instances being able to host without implementing #uploadfilter by calling your member of the European parliament and convincing them stand against #Article13 in the upcoming vote for the #copyright reform.
People who hate #Article13 and don't want it to pass in its current form:
☑ 4,000,000+ Europeans
☑ Top copyright scholars
☑ The inventors of the internet and the web
☑ The movie industry
☑ The sports leagues

aaaaand now...
☑ The record industry
В Россию можно переносить серверы из Европы потому что дешевле и вообще тут не сильно заботятся о копирайте

Meanwhile, the EU has voted to kill the Internet as we know it and possibly aid in creating an even bigger surveillance machine in the process.

Civil disobedience is the way forward on this one. We redouble our efforts to create decentralised alternatives and if they’re deemed illegal by this myopic legislation, so be it. Fuck ’em. We go to jail if we need to.

If you had any illusions that the battle for personhood and human rights would be easier in our age, think again.

So, as you may have read, the European Parliament voted today as follows:

#Article13 (upload filters)
Passed: 366 for, 297 against

#Article 11 (link tax)
Passed: 393 for, 279 against

(They also banned people taking unofficial video or photos of sports events ⚽ 🚫 📸 )

So, close but not enough 😟

However, this was not the final vote. There will be more negotiations and a final vote in spring of 2019.

I would advise following Julia Reda, one of the good MEPs:
European Parliament endorses upload filters and “link tax”
Hello Assembled People of European Mastodon! I work at @eff on international copyright. You might have heard of #article13, the EU proposal to require © filters on sharing sites.

We're really worried that this could affect services like ActivePub/Mastodon instances, opening them up to lawsuits or requiring expensive filters.

The key vote is on Wednesday -- please call or write your MEP and ask them to vote against #article13 to protect the future of the internet!

BREAKING: In a huge victory, the European Parliament has voted 318-278 against #Article13 and #Article11—the disastrous #CensorshipMachine and #LinkTax copyright proposals.

That means we’re close to stopping these terrible proposals—and we’re gaining momentum.
BREAKING: The EU JURI committee has passed #Article13. This requires sites to filter all submissions against a database of copyrighted works—creating a #CensorshipMachine that puts thousands of daily activities and millions of Internet users at the mercy of algorithmic filters.
